Pregnancy can rob girls of life chances. A girl’s health can be adversely affected, along with their child’s, forcing them to leave school and give-up their goals for the future.

THE FACTS

Pregnancy can rob girls of life chances. A girl’s health can be adversely affected, along with their child’s, forcing them to leave school and give-up their goals for the future. It’s a fact that 16 million girls become pregnant every year, and 50% of those pregnancies end in abortion.

But the world is changing. Now that 80% of Africans own mobile phones, girls are connecting to the healthcare services they need through ITH’s digital platform.

The time has come to advance, don’t leave it to chance.

ITH IN ACTION

Girls sign up to the ITH digital platform on a mobile phone, or through one of our community mobilisers on the ground. She can then access a network of clinics and providers that offer free sexual and reproductive health services, counselling about contraceptive options, and advice on STIs.

She rates the service and shares it with other girls. Sharing ratings motivates health providers to be more accountable and make their service better. To keep encouraging positive behaviour, girls are given loyalty points called Tiko for their participation that can be spent on a range of items at local shops. Girls who don’t have a phone are able to access ITH services through a membership card.
